Struggling with depression? You are not alone....

Depression is often described in many ways. For some people, it can feel like a quiet suppression of expression – emotions dampened, needs unmet and parts of the self going unheard. It may also show up in persistent low mood, reduced energy, lack of motivation, chronic fatigue, changes in sleep or appetite, or a sense of disconnection from yourself and others.

A woman sitting on a couch holds a tissue to her face while appearing tearful during a counselling session, with a therapist seated opposite taking notes in a calm, supportive setting.

If you are struggling, you are not alone, and support is available. Alongside professional help, some gentle lifestyle practices may help support your mental wellbeing.

1. Movement

Movement can be a powerful mood regulator. The “best” exercise is the one you will actually do and enjoy. Even small amounts of movement every day can make a difference. This could be a short walk, stretching, yoga, dancing, Zumba or any sport.

2. Spend time in nature

Connecting with nature can be grounding and calming for the nervous system. Spend time in the sun and fresh air, touch a plant, smell the roses, or simply pause to notice what Mother Earth has to offer. These small moments of presence can gently lift mood and reduce stress.

3. Check your physical health

Mental health and physical health are closely connected. Consider visiting your GP for a comprehensive blood test. Low iron (which is very common in women), low zinc, and other nutritional imbalances can contribute to low mood, irritability, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping.

4. Explore a hobby

When was the last time you had fun? Is there something you have always wanted to try? Better yet, share the hobby with your best friend or someone you know will enjoy it with you!

5. Connect with trusted loved ones

Human connection is deeply healing. Reach out to someone you trust – a friend, family member, or partner. Sometimes a single conversation can lift your spirit more than you expect.

If you have tried these strategies and still feel stuck, you do not need to navigate this alone. Therapy offers a compassionate and supportive space where you can be truly heard, understood, and held as you explore what your body, mind, and soul need.
