3 Herbs for Menopause and why they are helpful

Menopause is the cessation of the menstrual cycle and the end of reproductive life for a woman. Eggs are no longer produced by the ovaries and there is a decline in the production of the hormones, progesterone and oestrogen.

Supporting the transition to menopause requires a wholistic approach. Perimenopause or the lead up to menopause can be complex in its manifestation due to the many body systems involved.

Symptoms include hot flushes and night sweats, migraines and headaches, insomnia, depression, anxiety, concentration difficulties, irritability, loss of libido, urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness, skin and hair changes.

Rebecca our Naturopath is passionate about supporting women during this transitional period. She takes a detailed medical history and will create a treatment plan that may involve lifestyle advice, herbal support, and dietary management.

3 herbs that Rebecca commonly uses, and that may be helpful in supporting the transition to menopause are:

  • Sage (Salvia officinalis) has traditionally been used for the hot flushes and night sweats of menopause. Sage may also help to improve memory and concentration and is used for tension headaches.

  • Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is traditionally used for menopausal changes. Chaste tree may be helpful in the treatment of hot flushes and night sweats, anxiety and menopause-related sleep disturbances.

  • Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is a herb used to decrease night sweats and excessive perspiration. Schisandra is also a nerve tonic and adaptogen helping to support many body systems in the transition to menopause. It may be useful for menopausal symptoms such as: insomnia, mild depression, fatigue and concentration issues.
