Struggling In Your Work Life? Work Specific Counselling May Be Of Benefit.

Our jobs are a major part of our lives. Some of us work more hours than we sleep!

While it is normal to feel seasons of being stuck or bored within work; these feelings should not be long term. We’ve all endured some pretty heavy stressors in the last few years, and many of us have had huge, unexpected changes in our work lives. I have a keen interest in supporting and working with clients who are struggling with work. If work has become increasingly difficult, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, or if you want to ‘nip the feeling of dissatisfaction in the bud’, keep reading.

Signs that you may benefit from work focused counselling:

  • Dreading Monday! Have you been noticed that you are dreading Monday mornings or even taking more days off?

  • Feeling undervalued. Are you feeling that your contribution at work is not being noticed or valued?

  • Fatigue while at work. Are you feeling fatigued and drained while you’re at work?

  • Feeling resentful. Are you feeling annoyed at your colleagues for reasons that normally wouldn’t irritate you?

  • Wishing you had made other choices in life. Do you think back on your career and wonder, ‘if only I did this, or choose this option’?

If you found yourself nodding along to the above questions – applying some of these tips may help.

  • Speak to the manager! Do a ‘Karen’ and talk to your colleagues and boss. If you are feeling unchallenged by the work, have you considered approaching your manager to discuss further scope for expansion in your role? Get things off your chest; two heads coming together are better than one.

  • You have choice! Remembering that working in your job is a choice you have made and you can always change that.  i.e. While in your current role, look out for other opportunities.

  • Try to reframe through self-talk. “I’ve GOT TO go to work to support the family, pay for my car lease, pay the mortgage, etc”. Feeling like you’ve “got to” do something feels very heavy and makes you feel stuck and powerless.  I invite clients to consider replacing “got to” with the words “CHOOSE TO”. Knowing that you’re making a choice, feels lighter and more powerful.

  • Come back to what attracted you initially. Thinking about what it was that attracted you to your position in the first place, and what circumstances have changed your view. Writing down these as dot points and having them accessible during times of dissatisfaction can be really helpful.
