Busting Common Osteopathy Myths: Q&A edition

Alyssa, an osteopath at Fundamental Health, debunks some of the common myths surrounding osteopathy.

Q: Is osteopathy just another form of alternative Medicine?

A: No.
Osteopaths in Australia are fully qualified allied health professionals. They complete years of university study and are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA).

Q: Do osteopaths only treat back pain and bones?

A: No.
They help with a wide range of conditions, including neck and shoulder pain, headaches, sports injuries, joint problems, and more. At Fundamental Health, we have osteopaths with further training in Women's Health.

Q: Is osteopathy just about cracking joints?

A: Not at all.
While osteopaths are trained in HVLA (high velocity, low amplitude) techniques, also referred to as adjustments or manipulations, they are also equipped with a wide variety of other techniques. Not all osteopaths treat using adjustments, so always good to check the bio of the practitioner or call the clinic if you are interested in specific techniques.

Q: Do I need a referral to see an osteopath?

A: No.
You can book directly with an osteopath without needing a referral from your GP.

Q: Is there any science behind osteopathy?

A: Yes.
There is an ever-growing evidence base that supports osteopathy, especially for back pain and joint conditions.
